AUDDIS stands for ‘Automated Direct Debit Instruction Service’ and was brought in to help reduce the time, paperwork and effort in setting up Direct Debit Instructions.

AUDDIS is the Bacs service that enables your organisation to set up new Direct Debit Instructions (DDI) at your customers’ bank electronically. This means you can set up new DDIs over the phone, internet or face-to-face without the customer having to sign a paper instruction.

It speeds up the time between when a bank receives and accepts a DDI and the collection of first payment, meaning you receive your money faster.

It also allows organisations to be notified of failed Direct Debits and reasons for failure, through an AUDDIS report. Migrating to AUDDIS means that you can move to Paperless Direct Debit too. We regularly help clients to migrate to AUDDIS, as well as ex-banking staff who know the process and what’s needed to ensure a smooth migration.

What’s the benefit of AUDDIS?

AUDDIS makes administration more efficient for all parties. Banks and service users benefit from reduced paper-handling and fewer errors, whilst customers enjoy a better quality service. For service users, AUDDIS ensures:

  • Lower postage and set up costs for Direct Debit Instructions (DDI)
  • Faster identification of invalid account information significantly reducing unpaid Direct Debits
  • reduction in the time between lodgement, when the bank receives and accepts the DDI, and the collection of the first payment
  • A better quality of service through reduced processing delays and fewer manual steps
  • More accurate identification of a DDI through a mandatory reference
  • Greater uniformity and ease of DDI processing
  • A reduction in the potential for re-keying errors, further improving the quality of service.

The benefits for banks include:

  • Reduction in processing time
  • Reduction in the potential for error
  • Minimises paperwork and manual input
  • Takes paper out of the banking system – and is now the accepted standard throughout the banking industry.

For consumers, AUDDIS increases efficiency of the Direct Debit service/product offered.

What difference does AUDDIS make?

Yes. AUDDIS is primarily aimed at service users collecting high volumes of low value payments, but any collecting organisation can apply to use the service.

Acceptance is controlled by the banking industry, with potential service users being vetted for compliance to service standards.

Once their bank is satisfied that they meet the criteria required to join, they will be accepted.

Can any organisation apply to use AUDDIS?

Does AUDDIS affect advance notice?

No. The rules covering advance notice to customers before collection of a first payment – or variations to amount, date or frequency – are unchanged.

The default period is a minimum of 10 working days plus postal time.

Must existing service users convert all their current DDIs to AUDDIS?

If a service user is unable to convert all current DDIs then they can just convert some DDIs to the service.

However, separate service user numbers (SUNs) must be used for AUDDIS and non- AUDDIS DDIs.
